Secretary to the Cabinet, Patrick Kangwa, has issued a clarion call for the full utilization of irrigation schemes across Zambia, emphasizing their critical role in bolstering agricultural productivity and ensuring food security in the face of climate change.
During a recent visit to the Mwomboshi irrigation scheme in Chisamba district, Mr. Kangwa underscored the government’s significant investments in developing and revamping numerous dams and irrigation systems throughout the country. He urged farmers to swiftly capitalize on these resources to cultivate crops year-round, thereby enhancing national food production.
“With the increasing impacts of climate change, it is imperative that we ensure our farmers can produce food consistently throughout the year,” Mr Kangwa stated. “This is crucial for improving household food security and strengthening our national food basket.”
Mr. Kangwa further emphasized the importance of increased agricultural participation among Zambians, encouraging citizens to engage in farming, even on a small scale, to enhance their food and nutrition security. He stressed the need for a shift in mindset among public servants to fully embrace the government’s development agenda and contribute to national progress.
Central Province Permanent Secretary, Milner Mwanakampwe, commended the Defence Force for its significant contributions to enhancing maize production in the country.
Meanwhile, the Zambia Correctional Service (ZCS) has demonstrated a strong commitment to agricultural productivity. The service has successfully cultivated over 500 hectares of maize at its Mwomboshi farms, showcasing the potential for productive agricultural ventures within the correctional system.
Mr. Kangwa’s call for the full utilization of irrigation schemes underscores the government’s commitment to modernizing Zambia’s agricultural sector. By leveraging these vital resources and encouraging active participation from all sectors of society, the nation can strive towards greater food security and sustainable agricultural development.
