In a landscape ravaged by deforestation, mining, and poaching, a glimmer of hope is emerging in the Malawi-Zambia Transfrontier Conservation Area (TFCA). The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) has renewed its commitment to enhancing green agriculture in this pivotal region, a cornerstone of IFAW’s Room to Roam initiative.

“This extended support is a game-changer,” said Neil Greenwood, IFAW Regional Director – Southern Africa “It allows us to continue our work in transforming the lives of smallholder farmers and protecting the environment.”

Partnering with COMACO, the project has already yielded remarkable results. Over 5,000 farmers have been introduced to climate-smart techniques, such as cultivating legume crops that nourish the soil rather than depleting it.

“Before, I struggled to feed my family,” explained Grace, a farmer from Chikomeni, Zambia. ” I have surplus crops to sell and can afford to send my children to school.”

The project has not only improved livelihoods but also bolstered food security. Crop yields have increased significantly, leading to a rise in farmer incomes.

To mitigate the impact of illegal deforestation, farmers are encouraged to plant Gliricidia sepium, a natural soil enhancer. “This tree is a lifesaver,” said Tackwell, another farmer. “It helps me reduce my reliance on chemical fertilizers and protect the forests.”

In addition to sustainable farming practices, the project also focuses on building community resilience. Boreholes and granaries are being constructed to ensure access to clean water and secure food storage. Innovative income-generating activities, such as beekeeping, provide farmers with alternative livelihood sources.

“We are working closely with communities to develop strategies for coexisting with wildlife,” said Greenwood. “Non-lethal methods, like chilli ‘bombs,’ are being used to protect crops from elephant raids.”

The project spans eight chiefdoms where communities live close to nature and wildlife, including elephants. Thanks to the continued support from GIZ, a sustainable future where communities and nature can flourish side by side is within reach.

As the world grapples with climate change, the work being done in the TFCA offers a model for sustainable development. By empowering local communities and promoting environmentally friendly practices, we can create a greener, more resilient future for generations to come.
