Lusaka, Zambia – The Zambia National Farmers Union (ZNFU) has thrown its weight behind President Hakainde Hichilema’s agricultural agenda, hailing the government’s ambitious plans to revitalize the sector.
In a statement released following the President’s address to the fourth session of the Thirteenth National Assembly, ZNFU President Jervis Zimba praised the government’s commitment to boosting agricultural financing, infrastructure development, and environmental protection.
“The increased agricultural financing facility from ZMK400 million to ZMK1.2 billion is a game-changer for farmers,” Zimba said. “It will provide critical support to those who have been struggling in the wake of the severe drought.”
The Union also welcomed the government’s plans to expand access to agricultural loans and ensure that inputs reach farmers in need through the Direct Input Supply system. “This will help address the critical shortage of maize in the drought-affected regions,” Zimba noted.
ZNFU also expressed its support for the government’s efforts to improve infrastructure, such as the construction of the 300-megawatt thermal power plant in Maamba and the rehabilitation of feeder roads. “These developments will enhance productivity and improve access to markets for farmers,” Zimba said.
The Union also commended the government’s commitment to protecting Zambia’s environment. “We are committed to working with the government to identify and map vital water resources to ensure their conservation,” Zimba added.
Overall, ZNFU is optimistic about the future of Zambia’s agricultural sector. “The government’s policies will promote innovation, improve food security, and enhance the livelihoods of farmers across the country,” Zimba concluded.
