Chisamba, Zambia: Zambia’s agricultural sector has received a significant boost with the official opening of a state-of-the-art cheese manufacturing plant by Zambeef Products PLC. Nestled at Huntley Farm in Chisamba, this ambitious facility represents a substantial investment in agro-processing and value addition – twin pillars crucial to the nation’s economic transformation and the upliftment of livelihoods.
Commissioned by the Minister of Fisheries and Livestock, Peter Kapala, the plant can transform up to 3.4 tonnes of locally sourced milk into premium-quality cheese each day. This development is being celebrated as a watershed moment, promising to curtail Zambia’s dependence on imported dairy products and fortify its burgeoning dairy industry.
For Zambia’s dairy farmers, particularly the smallholders who often grapple with market access and volatile demand, this investment is a game-changer. The Zambeef facility guarantees a reliable and consistent buyer for their milk, instilling the confidence needed to scale up production with the assurance of stable returns.
Minister Kapala underscored the plant’s profound impact on rural incomes. “This initiative not only bolsters our national food security but directly elevates the lives of small-scale farmers across the country,” he declared. It is a tangible demonstration of the transformative power of value-added collaboration when the public and private sectors forge a collaborative path.
Beyond its direct impact on farmers, the cheese plant is also a significant engine for job creation in Chisamba and its surrounding areas. Dozens of roles have already been filled in crucial areas such as operations, meticulous quality control, efficient logistics, and essential administration. As the plant ramps up its production capacity, a further wave of employment opportunities is anticipated, providing much-needed livelihoods for the youth and women who form the backbone of rural communities.
The ripple effect of Zambeef’s venture extends beyond direct employment. The establishment of this facility opens up a landscape of secondary business opportunities for enterprising individuals and SMEs. Supplying essential inputs such as animal feed, providing crucial transport and packaging materials, offering vital veterinary services, and delivering reliable refrigeration solutions are just some of the avenues now available within the expanding dairy value chain. This multiplier effect is poised to inject broader economic vitality across various sectors.
Zambeef’s strategic investment aligns seamlessly with the government’s determined push for industrialization and the championing of local content development. The company’s unwavering commitment to agro-processing reflects a long-term vision of transforming Zambia from a primary exporter of raw commodities to a robust manufacturing-based economy. This new cheese plant stands as a significant stride towards realizing that ambitious national goal.
