The Zambia Institute of Chartered Accountants (ZiCA) has taken a significant step towards environmental sustainability by planting 100 fruit trees at Kabwanga Secondary School. The initiative, part of the Institute’s International Accounting Day celebrations, underscores its commitment to broader social and environmental issues.
ZiCA Vice President, Joseph Matimba, emphasized the dual benefits of the tree-planting exercise. “Fruit trees not only contribute to a greener and healthier environment but also provide economic opportunities for communities through food production and income generation,” he said.
Recognizing the pressing issue of deforestation in the Kabwanga area, Matimba urged community members to take action against climate change by adopting sustainable practices. He encouraged households to plant and care for trees, contributing to a more sustainable future.
The initiative aligns with the government’s efforts to combat climate change and promote sustainable development. The planted fruit trees, including guava, lemon, and citrus varieties, were carefully selected for their environmental and economic value.
Dr. Simasiku Nawa, the Mumbwa District Administration Officer, praised ZiCA’s initiative, highlighting its potential to mitigate climate change while providing tangible benefits to the community. He urged Kabwanga pupils and residents to nurture the trees, ensuring their long-term growth and productivity.
Headman Mukwempa of the Kabwanga area expressed gratitude to ZiCA for the initiative, recognizing its contribution to sustainable development. He called on other organizations to follow suit and support similar efforts to create a greener and healthier Zambia.
ZiCA’s commitment to sustainability extends beyond its core financial role. By taking such initiatives, the Institute demonstrates its dedication to making a positive impact on society and the environment.
