Lusaka: President Hakainde Hichilema has unveiled a bold strategy to transform Zambia into a beef export powerhouse, aiming to diversify the nation’s economy and reduce its reliance on copper mining. The ambitious plan, announced during a Presidential Stocktake with the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock, envisions Zambia becoming a leading beef supplier to the region and beyond.
“The livestock sector offers a significant opportunity to diversify our economy, reducing our dependence on mineral resources and driving growth,” President Hichilema declared, outlining a vision of a thriving agricultural sector contributing substantially to the national economy.
Central to this strategy is the establishment of five pilot Animal Disease-Free Compartments (ADFCs) in key livestock regions: Chikankata, Chipata, Chisamba, Mumbwa, and Namwala. These compartments, designed to meet stringent international standards, will ensure that Zambian beef is free from diseases, enhancing its appeal in global markets. The government plans to expand the ADFC network to other regions, further solidifying Zambia’s position as a reliable beef exporter.
The government’s ambition is clear: to generate a minimum of $1 billion annually from beef exports. President Hichilema has instructed relevant ministries to expedite efforts in expanding market access and improving livestock management practices, ensuring that Zambia can meet the growing global demand for high-quality beef.
This strategic pivot towards the beef industry is part of a broader economic diversification drive. Historically, Zambia’s economy has been heavily dependent on copper mining, making it vulnerable to fluctuations in global commodity prices. 1 The government’s focus on agriculture, particularly livestock, aims to create a more resilient and diversified economy.
Industry experts believe that the success of this initiative hinges on several key factors. Strengthening veterinary services, upgrading infrastructure, and securing favourable trade agreements with key markets will be crucial. With its vast pasturelands and favourable climate, Zambia possesses the natural advantages to compete with major beef-exporting nations.
If successful, Zambia’s foray into the global beef market could create significant economic benefits, including increased employment opportunities in the agricultural sector and enhanced foreign exchange earnings. This initiative represents a bold step towards building a more prosperous and diversified future for Zambia.
