LUSAKA – Zambia, a nation perennially at the mercy of unpredictable weather patterns, is making a decisive move to secure its food future. In a bold bid to transition to smart agriculture and combat the ravages of climate change, the Southern African country is actively wooing Chinese technology firms, hoping to cultivate a new era of agricultural prosperity.
A high-level delegation from Zambia’s ruling United Party for National Development (UPND), currently in China at the invitation of the Communist Party of China (CPC), has been on a whirlwind tour, meeting with leading agro-tech companies. The mission? To forge partnerships that will infuse Zambian farming with cutting-edge innovation.
The week kicked off with a significant visit to Chuxiong City in Yunnan Province. Here, Zambian delegates engaged with market leaders like Yunnan Moore Farm Biotech Development, Yunnan Dianxi Seed Industry Sci-Tech Innovation Centre, and Yunnan Alphy Biotech. These Chinese powerhouses specialize in critical areas such as biotechnology, high-yield seed development, organic fertilizers, and plant-based health supplements – all vital ingredients for Zambia’s agricultural transformation.
“Zambia is open for business,” declared Batuke Imenda, UPND Secretary General and head of the delegation, his words echoing the nation’s eagerness for collaboration. “We are actively seeking partnerships that bring innovation, sustainability, and inclusive growth. The firms we’ve engaged here have the capacity to help us achieve that.”
Under the leadership of President Hakainde Hichilema, the Zambian government is prioritizing the widespread adoption of climate-smart and irrigation-driven farming methods. This ambitious strategy aims to ensure year-round food production, significantly boost exports, and create much-needed jobs in a country frequently battling droughts and the broader impacts of climate change.
This high-stakes visit is more than just a business trip; it’s a critical component of a wider cooperation initiative between the UPND and the Communist Party of China.
