Zambia is set to leverage Kenyan technology to modernise its agricultural sector, with a focus on livestock management and veterinary services. The collaboration, announced by Agriculture Minister Reuben Mtolo, will see Zambia adopt a digital livestock tracking system that has proven effective in Kenya for curbing cattle rustling and improving traceability.
The system, which monitors animal location, vaccination history, and feeding practices, is expected to be a game-changer for Zambia’s livestock industry. “This technology is vital for modernizing our veterinary services,” Mtolo said, speaking from the UN Food Systems Summit in Ethiopia.
The partnership extends beyond digital tracking. Zambia is also seeking technology transfer and technical support from Kenya to strengthen its animal health sector, particularly in vaccine production. Kenya currently manufactures 14 different types of vaccines, including for Foot and Mouth Disease, a key area of interest for Zambia.
The agreement falls under the 2022 Memorandum of Understanding on Agriculture between the two nations, which aims to enhance bilateral trade, technology exchange, and food security. In a related development, Kenya’s Agriculture Minister, Mutahi Kagwe, noted that increased maize trade between the two countries will further support food and animal feed security.
