Nchimunya Munyama’s story is one that embodies the potential of innovation to transform lives and livelihoods. Growing up in Zambia’s Southern Province, Nchimunya witnessed firsthand the struggles faced by small-holder farmers – his grandfather included. Unpredictable weather patterns, relentless pests, and a lack of access to reliable information all conspired to limit crop yields and threaten food security.

“It was a constant battle,” Nchimunya reflects. “Traditional practices often proved inadequate, leaving farmers vulnerable to crop loss and reduced income.”

Fueled by a desire to empower his community, Nchimunya embarked on a journey that led him to create Netagrow Technologies. This AI and data-driven platform is bridging the information gap for Zambian farmers, providing them with the tools they need to optimize crop yields.

Netagrow’s mobile application connects over 5,000 farmers with a network of more than 1,000 agricultural experts. Farmers can access real-time guidance on pest control, disease management, and optimal harvest schedules. The platform also facilitates market access, allowing farmers to connect with credible buyers for their produce.

Nchimunya’s vision extends beyond the app. He is currently developing the Netagrow Device, a hardware solution that will collect comprehensive environmental data, further enhancing the quality of insights delivered to farmers. Additionally, he is exploring the potential of automation, with a focus on precision irrigation based on real-time data analysis.

“The support I’ve received has been instrumental,” Nchimunya acknowledges. “The UNDP Accelerator Lab provided crucial funding to develop the app and launch it on major platforms. Now, the Mukuba University Innovation Pod (Unipod) is equipping me with the expertise and mentorship needed to navigate the complexities of bringing this innovation to scale.”

The Mukuba Unipod is part of a network of thirteen such facilities established across Africa by the timbuktoo initiative. These hubs provide young innovators like Nchimunya with the space, resources, and mentorship needed to develop and refine their ideas.

With over 70% of Zambian farmers still relying on traditional practices, Nchimunya’s intervention is a timely one. His story is a testament to the power of resilience, passion, and a commitment to using technology to empower communities.

“My vision is for Netagrow to become the leading force in data-driven agriculture across Africa,” Nchimunya declares. “I see a future where thousands of farmers are empowered, crop losses are significantly reduced, and a new generation of informed and prosperous agricultural entrepreneurs emerges.”

As Nchimunya continues to refine Netagrow, his innovation has the potential to not only improve the lives of Zambian farmers but also serve as a model for agricultural development across the continent.
